About Me

My background
I began playing the violin in 3rd grade (about 30 years ago!), and in 9th grade I started playing the viola. I was the principal violist in my high school’s Chamber Orchestra and Philharmonic Orchestra. I graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and put my musical interests on hold while I taught school, married, and started a family. I have 4 children, two of whom are currently taking piano lessons, so I know what it's like being a music parent, as well as a music teacher. I began teaching violin in March 2018 and absolutely love it! It perfectly combines my passions for education, children, and music.
My philosophy
I prepare each student for success by learning their musical strengths and interests, developing a relationship of trust and mutual respect, and pointing out the positive. Learning the violin involves training both the body and the mind. It requires consistent effort; practice makes progress, and progress makes it fun and exciting!
My curriculum
I use the Suzuki method with additional theory instruction from the book Essential Elements for Strings. I adapt these resources and supplement with additional materials and teaching strategies as I see fit. I utilize many of the methods of Mimi Zweig for teaching the Suzuki violin songs. For information about the Suzuki method: https://suzukiassociation.org/about/suzuki-method/For a look at Essential Elements for Strings, search “Essential Elements for Strings Book 1 Violin” on Amazon.comFor information about Mimi Zweig String Pedagogy: https://www.connollymusic.com/string-pedagogyAvailabilityI am accepting violin students ages 6 and up. Lessons are held once a week for 30 minutes.
